Thayer Cemetery

Rules & Regulations


Thayer Cemetery is located at the northeast corner of Six Mile and Napier Roads in Northville Township, Michigan. It is operated by the Thayer Cemetery Association. The mailing address is: 35650 Florane Street, Westland, MI 48186-4144. Contact number is 734 595-7806.

RULES FOR VISITORS
Six Mile is designated as the entrance and exit for vehicles in the Cemetery.
Visiting hours are from sunrise to sunset.
Filming or videotaping of funeral proceedings is not allowed without permission from the immediate family.
Firearms will be allowed inside the Cemetery only for use at military funerals.
It is unlawful to bring, cause, or permit a dog or any animal to enter the Cemetery except seeing-eye dogs, unless confined inside a vehicle.

SALE OF LOTS
All Cemetery lots shall be purchased from the Thayer Cemetery Association as follows:

Residents shall be considered those living in the surrounding communities of Plymouth, Northville, Northville Twp., Salem and South Lyon.

Lot owners may not resell their lots. Lot owners wishing to dispose of lots may sell them back to the Association at the original purchase price. Transfer may be made only to the owner's spouse or children.

INTERMENTS
Burial of two or more persons in one grave space is not permitted, except: mother and infants, infant twins, cases where an infant is to be buried with a relative who has acted as the guardian, and cremations. For cremations in a traditional in-ground grave: no more than one casket and two cremation urns; or four cremation urns may be entombed in a single grave without a casket. Interments may be made only in approved containers. Cremated remains must be in a non- biodegradable, unbreakable container made of concrete, plastic or metal.

As soon as flowers, flags or emblems used at funerals for the adornment of graves becomes unsightly, they will be removed and no responsibility for their return to the owners will be assumed.

GRAVE MARKERS
A single marker shall not be less than 8 or more than 16 inches wide, not less than 18 or more than 28 inches long and shall be on a foundation at least 1 inch below the lowest ground level and not less than 4 inches or more than 6 inches above the lawn. Raised letters are not permitted on stone markers that are level with the lawn.

One grave marker embracing two grave spaces may be allowed if both grave spaces are paid for and the purchaser agrees to bear the cost of removing and resetting the dual marker when the second grave space is to be used. Double markers shall not be less than 36 inches nor more than 48 inches long and not less than 10 inches and not more than 16 inches wide and shall be on a foundation at least 1 inch below the lowest ground level and not less than 4 inches or more than 6 inches above the lawn.

Markers made of wood or marble are prohibited. Only one marker per grave is permitted.

MONUMENTS
Monument bases shall not be less than 12 inches or more than 20 inches wide. The length of the base shall not exceed 48 inches for a 4 grave lot, 60 inches for a 6 grave lot, 84 inches for an 8 grave lot and 108 inches for a 10 grave lot. The maximum height of a monument shall not exceed 14 feet. The location and type of any monument on a lot must be approved by the Cemetery Management in conformity with other nearby monuments. All monuments must meet with the approval of the Cemetery Management on all criteria of permanence and indestructibility, of style and of size. No monuments may be erected on a lot which is not paid in full.

PERPETUAL CARE
Perpetual care shall include mowing of lots and graves, re-sodding, seeding, filling in sunken graves, or sodding over the surface of graves to lot level.

Perpetual Care does not include the maintenance, repair or replacement of any marker or memorial placed or erected on the lot.

PLANTINGS
No trees, shrubs, bushes, etc. may be planted in the cemetery unless special permission is obtained from the Cemetery Association. Flowers and wreaths may be placed on a gravesite but no permanent shrubs, trees or plantings will be permitted.

DECORATION OF GRAVES
Cut flowers will be removed weekly. Potted plants will be removed at such times as necessary to maintain a sightly appearance in the cemetery. Potted plants shall be in containers suitable for anchoring to the ground without digging. Permanent, round plant holders with caps set flush with the ground are permitted.

One (1) flag holder will be allowed for each veteran's grave.
