Thayer Cemetery

History

Rufus Thayer, Jr. bought land and came to Michigan in 1826. He was a successful farmer born in Vermont, and coming from New York. He allowed part of his land to be used as a cemetery, probably after he lost his two-year old son in 1838. George may have been the first burial here. There are other stones that are older, but others when they moved here.

In 1914, the Thayer Cemetery Association was formed to take over the perpetual care of the cemetery, which at that time was just the area behind the school house (the old section). In 1931, the Association purchased additional land from the Thayer family to enlarge the cemetery (the new section).

There are around 500 burials in Thayer Cemetery. A monument, dedicated to the veterans buried there, was dedicated Memorial Day, 2017.
